About the Minerals

All of the minerals needed for this chapter are in the kit. Most of the minerals are lettered with a code—the upper case letters are minerals used in the daily lessons. The lower case letters are reserved for the assessment. Students will identify the minerals as part of this chapter, so refrain from referring to the samples by name.

Classroom Mineral Set:
    A  Quartz (white)
    B  Calcite
    C  Feldspar (pink)
    D  Talc
    E  Mica (black)
    F  Hornblende
    G  Hematite
    H  Pyrite
    I magnetite
Additional Minerals for Lesson 6:
    Pink quartz
Additional Minerals for Lesson 8:
    Fluorite
    Graphite
    Gypsum
    Native copper
    Sulfur
Additional Minerals for Lesson 9:
    a  Galena
    b  Feldspar (white)

Replacing Letters on Mineral Samples

There will be times when you need to repair or replace some of the paper letters used to code the minerals. (Students will pick off some of the letters; others will get scuffed from handling and storage.) To replace a letter:
    • Remove loose pieces of the old letter.
    • Cut off one of the needed letters from the page of replacement letters (see Black Line Masters).
    • Put a dab of glue on the spot where the letter goes. (Use a glue, such as Elmer’s, that dries clear.)
    • Place the letter on the glue and smear some glue over the top of it. (This seals the edges and protects the letter.)
